When I first began to understand the depths of my chronic illness, it was as if a fog had lifted from my life. In one sense, I felt seen and validated in my struggles; in another, I was overwhelmed by the weight of this revelation. Of course, a lot of my concerns are still undiagnosed. But, for those that do have a label, the insight has been invaluable, in the end.

It’s okay to feel relief and gratitude for finally understanding what’s happening within you, while also experiencing fear and anxiety about the unknowns ahead. Embrace your emotions, and remember that they’re all valid parts of your journey.

Coming to terms with your diagnosis is a crucial step on your journey to acceptance. Take the time to educate yourself about your chronic illness and its potential impact on your life. Coming to terms with a chronic illness often involves adapting to a new normal. I know–we’re all sick of this phrasing in a post-COVID world. But it’s so, so crucial. This may mean adjusting your daily routine, setting new priorities, or finding alternative ways to pursue your passions. It can be challenging to let go of the life you once knew, but embracing this new normal can also be empowering.

Take the time to explore different strategies for managing your symptoms, such as holistic wellness practices like meditation, yoga, and nutrition. Be open to trying new things and always remember to be patient with yourself as you navigate these changes.

  1. Thanks for this post. Last year I had a huge health crisis which caused me to spend 2 weeks in various hospitals and going from being a relatively healthy person to suddenly having a chronic illness. I’m still in the process of trying to accept my illness.

    One topic from this post that would be helpful to go more into in another post is more about how to pursue holistic wellness and how to think about and practice being healthy while being chronically ill. I have really been struggling with this in the past year as it feels like my body is “broken” (like I said, still working on acceptance) so what is the point of trying to be “healthy?” I hope this makes sense and doesn’t come across as problematic.
